The Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor) is an orchid with a twist—instead of being grown primarily for its flowers, this beauty is loved for its incredible foliage. 

Deep, velvety leaves are decorated with delicate contrasting veins that seem to shimmer when they catch the light, giving the plant its jewel-like appearance. And while the foliage steals the show year-round, mature plants can also produce delicate spikes of small white flowers during the colder months (November-April).

Unlike many orchids, Ludisia discolor grows terrestrially, meaning it naturally grows in organic material rather than living as an epiphyte high in the trees.

Give your Jewel Orchid low to bright, indirect light and protect it from strong direct sun, which can damage its velvety foliage.

Water when the upper layer of the growing medium begins to dry. Jewel Orchids prefer more consistent moisture than many traditional orchids but should never remain waterlogged.

A loose, well-draining mix that retains some moisture works beautifully. Moderate to high humidity can encourage lush foliage, although the plant can adapt well to normal indoor conditions.
